Bio

Mr MJ Custers has 25 years’ experience in the Integrated Environmental Management field and is a registered professional environmental assessment practitioner. His passion lies in better understanding the impact of business and development activities on the environment in pursuit of promoting the goals of sustainable development.

His undergraduate degree in Botany and Zoology (1994) and post graduate degrees (Botany Honours – 1995 and Master of Science Resource Conservation Biology – 1997) have provided him with a critical foundation to understanding the significance of development impacts and together with his experience in dealing with a range of various development types and scopes, affords him the ability to proactively guide, structure and plan mitigation measures and actions plans. This is typically provided in the form of Environmental Management Plans and Programmes. His regular review and assessment of development impacts across a wide spectrum of projects further benefits the implementation and mitigation of environmental impacts.

Mr Custers has led and managed several strategic projects with the mandate to offer sustainable strategies and plans to guide and direct infrastructure initiatives and urban developments. These have included Strategic Environmental Assessments in sensitive environments, Environmental Management Frameworks and Master Plans.

Mark is an expert in the Integrated Environmental Management processes and procedures with experience in a range of projects that include powerlines, road ways and urban development projects that span thousands of hectares.
Mark has compiled and acted as the project lead in various environmental management reports including Sensitivity Assessment; Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment; Basic Assessment Reporting; Environmental Compliance Officer monitoring; Audit Reporting; Environmental Management Programme Reports; Environmental Management Plans and Management Strategies, as well as undertaken reviews of the above over the span of more
than 25 years.

He has also worked with several larger companies and organizations to provide specialist ecological advice and guidance on many projects and activities within South Africa. This has also included areas affected by pollution events and illegal development activities.

The above mentioned skills and abilities place Mark in a position to make informed decisions in the fields of plant and soil ecology, conservation biology, restoration ecology, environmental impact, pollution & rehabilitation, environmental management, project management and business management.

Christa Custers

Christa is an Ecologist and registered Professional Natural Scientist

Bio

Mrs Christa Custers is a registered Professional Natural Scientist with SACNASP and qualified to compile biodiversity assessments as prescribed by the Department Forestry, Fisheries and Environment protocols for Biodiversity Assessment, Plant Species Assessment and Animal Species Assessment.Christa has been active as a Natural Scientist for over 30 years having qualified with a Master Degree in Plant Ecology at the University of Pretoria. She initially commenced work in the field of Planning with the Transvaal Provincial Department and later moved into the role as Assistant Director with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment.

In 2000, Christa co-founded Eco Assessments CC that focuses on assessing the impact of land development on the biophysical environment. This work has entailed compiling 100’s of biodiversity assessments that include ecological assessments, species of conservation concern assessments and open space management assessments. Her wide experience includes a wide range of projects extending a few hectares to investigations of over 1000’s of ha. Examples of these projects include commercial, industrial and residential estates, filling station applications, infrastructure (roads, powerline, pipeline) applications, waste management sites applications and open space applications.

Christa has also provided expert guidance, support and direction to many Strategic Assessments that include Environmental Management Frameworks for land
development, infrastructure development and open space planning.

Our expertise ranges from the understanding and application of the legally required National Environmental Management Act (107 of 1998) processes and procedures that development applications need to follow when seeking to undertake a listed activity (i.e. an action that may trigger requirements for environmental authorization).

We strive to provide innovative and practical solutions that minimize developments impacts on the social, economic and biophysical environment. We base our recommendations on an informed understanding of the environmental impact assessment procedures and management of natural resources

Our portfolio of projects ranges studies of environments that include residential plots of land to extensive mixed use residential estates, bulk infrastructure projects and strategic planning projects.
